Scandinavians have a lot to learn from the Russians – Day 4 in St. Petersburg

Day four of my trip to St Petersburg had arrived, and it was only a matter of hours until we had to jump in the car and head to the airport. The night before was spent with some of the people we had met during our stay at a restaurant. Celebrating new friendship, perspectives and future possibilities, might sound like a cliché but in that atmosphere nothing could be. These people were just filled with such amazing spirits that even I who is usually very positive felt a bit knocked over.

Anyway I think at breakfast this morning that we all felt a bit sad to leave and of course that made us a bit late for the daily schedule. The first and only planned stop today was the Hermitage.  However, we insisted on making another stop to the Kazan Cathedral An amazing building that we had passed numerous times but never had time to take a closer look at. Fortunately for us the cathedral was in walking distance from the Hermitage, so that was put on the daily schedule as well.

The Hermitage and the Kazan Cathedral

As I told you we were a bit late leaving the hotel as we had to pack our bags and get ready, since we were not coming back before we left for the airport. This almost caused us our visit to the hermitage since we were on quite a tight schedule and the hermitage sometimes have insanely long lines. But once again we had our luck with us as there were no lines at all. We later found out that this was because the summer was over, in the summers the lines can take hours and they spread all over the square in front of the building, and I will tell you, that is not a small square.DSCN1377DSCN1395

When in the museum I was almost more amazed by the incredible architecture than by the art itself. Although I was a bit surprised to find out that almost the whole museum burnt down during the war and everything were reconstructed after it was over. Though I could see that the internal architecture was in very good shape they fooled me. I had no idea that they could capture what used to be in such a real way, but since I am not an expert, others may disagree.

We walked around the hermitage main building and I got to see a few amazing paintings from Pablo Picasso and others. After spending some time viewing the older pieces as well as the more modern art we felt that enough was enough. Satisfied with our visit we continued to the fabulous Kazan Cathedral.

DSCN1416The cathedral turned out to be even more astonishing up close. The Russian architecture is truly massive, but everything seems to be under reconstruction and so was this building. But since you where allowed to go inside and thus see both the internal and external work of art the reconstruction did not bother me too much. Instead I am just happy to have seen yet another building in close up before it was time to leave.

After walking out of the cathedral we took a few more pictures, enjoyed our last Russian two course meal and sad our goodbyes to Katja before we headed off the airport. There it was time to say goodbye to Tuukka for now as he was flying to Finland, while the rest of us caught the flight to Stockholm. There we all split Bodil flew to Oslo, Janis took the train to Örebro and I continued my journey to Uppsala. I really hope to see them all very soon. I hope we will all attend next year’s Emax event in Denmark as volunteers.

A few last words about the trip

Before the trip I did not have a lot of time to read about the city and what you could see there, and when it came to my views of the culture, people and standards I think that my knowledge got stuck in the history classes in school. I believed that Russia was gray and cold and that the people were poor and had little charisma. Now I cannot understand how I could think that, I guess it was because I never really read or learned anything about the country after graduating high school, and all we learn there is about the wars, the problems and the poverty. Sure Russia has it problems still, but nothing is like I thought it would be.

Ok, I admit that Russia is cold, but St. Petersburg is a beautiful city with so much culture. The people who live there are very educated and proud of their city and they can tell you anything you want to know. Can you do that about your city? And when it comes to the poverty it might still be in their wallets but in their hearts they are such a rich group of people. I feel a lot more comfortable in a group of Russians than I would in most groups of Scandinavians; they are open, warm and pleasant to be around. While Scandinavians, at least young people, in comparison is so much more judgmental and uninviting, sad but true. I love Scandinavia and the people, but we are sometimes a hard group to get to know.

The programs that the Russian government and organization offers for prospective entrepreneurs are a lot more generous and promising that the ones that we have in Scandinavia. In Sweden you cannot get financial help to start a business unless you are unemployed. While in Russia the grant I have been talking about is offered to anyone. Adding to that the money you receive from the grant programs is not a loan; you get to keep that as long as you use the money according to the business plan. In Sweden all the money you can get is from a loan and that is not very encouraging for someone who wants to take a chance for something new? We might have prospective entrepreneurs in the country that wants to create something that could be ground breaking and great for the country, but where is the real support?

Sweden and I believe the other Nordic countries as well have a lot to learn from the programs and possibilities the Russian offers their Entrepreneurs. Start to study it now.

Small Business Growth At The Municipality Of Moskovsky District – day 1 in St. Petersburg

The Journey to St.Petersburg

The trip began early this morning, which mean that I caught the first bus to the airport at 5.10. Before this I had manage to take a shower, but my stomach was screaming for food and a cup of coffee would definitely have done wonders.

When I got the airport there was no line to the check-in, because most people check in online nowadays. That is people with a printer, since it apparently is required to print the boarding pass at home if you check in online. How are people who only travel occasionally supposed to keep up?

Anyway, since my bank had told me that they could not make a money exchange to Russian Rubel, I wanted to change money at the airport. Only at the airport I found out that the exchange office was closed and I was on my way to Russia without any cash, great! Instead I focused on my next mission food, which was more difficult than expected since airport food cannot manage the combination sandwich without meat and seeds, it was either or. So I ended out with two mini-yogurts. But as I had a Starbucks coffee in my hand I was not too disappointed.

Anyway, my journey to St. Petersburg was in general very uneventful. I had a layover in wonderful Denmark, a great idea since I got both a sandwich without meat and seeds and a few hundred Rubels. And by the time I got on the next flight I had no worries.

However, my luck was about to change again as I got in the airport in St. Petersburg, only to find out that they had lost my luggage somewhere. Later I found out that at least from Finland there are only three flights a week to St.Petersburg, so I could only hope that this was not the case from Denmark.

Anyway without a change of clothes or any idea of where the rest of my team was, I sat down in the car with the Non-English speaking driver who was going to get me to the next meeting. (I had to come a day later than the others because I had to work Monday)

The first meeting

DSCN0178

The first meeting was at the Young Entrepreneurs at the municipality of Moskovsky district of Saint-Petersburg. And the first thing that you should know, is that in the Nordic countries we mean young people, under 30 perhaps who are entrepreneurs. Here they have another definition; a young entrepreneur is someone who recently started a business, no matter the age of the person.

The municipality of Moskovsky’s main goal is growth of small business.  Today there are more than 16000 small business and 4500 individual entrepreneurs in the district, which have 300.000 inhabitants. The district has the highest quantity of small businesses in St.Petersburg and there are entrepreneurs in all different areas.

At the municipality we got a few presentations about different programs that the Moskovsky district has been working on. One that started this September is a new grant program for small businesses.

The grant program is open for anyone with a startup company. The business owners can apply to get 70 % (max 300.000 RUB) of their budget paid for from this government program, and this is money given to them, meaning that they do not have to pay them back. The only requirements are that the owners have a business plan and that they attended seminars in business development. Ofcourse the grant givers track the money and the receivers have to be able to explain every Rubel spent. I found this program very inspiring, so far 48 people have got the grant which gives them a great opportunity to succeed with their small business.

This is only one of the programs that they provide. The municipality of Moskovsky has a lot of smaller goals to help them improve the growth of small business. For example they arrange conferences and seminars to teach entrepreneurs about how different thing work, such as renting offices, taxes and entrepreneurial rights. They also participate in the law making for entrepreneurship. Another great service is that they always have the door open if entrepreneurs want to come and businesses idea or problems etc.

All this is only a few examples of that the government and the municipality of Moskovsky are working on, and they are all great example of how much Russia has changed during the resent years.

Another interesting organization that was presented was teenage +. It is an organization for teenagers between the age of 13-19 where the main goal is to develop leader qualities in young people. Something I found very promising. This goal is reached by letting young people participate in for example social and charity events, such as visiting old people, plant trees and keep the city and the playgrounds clean. The organization is founded by private contacts such as entrepreneurs and public organizations and as mention before the municipality of Moskovsky. The organization also arranges seminars, training and summer camps where the young members can get more theoretical knowledge and practice.

After the meeting a few of the participants took us on a sightseeing trip in a small bus around the Moskovsky district.

The evening

As I arrived fashionable late to the trip, the meeting I wrote about was the only one I took part in on Tuesday, and I must say that I found it very fascinating. They have a lot of good ideas and concepts, even though the grant for example does not really help entrepreneurs that do not have funds to cover the rest etc.

After the meeting we left our Russian hosts and went to eat a three course meal at a restaurant near the hotel, and even though I could not wait to see the rest of the city, I was too tired to begin with that after the meal. So instead my team mates and I spent the rest of the evening at the hotel catching up. It is amazing how many business ideas we could come up with only by having a conversation.

And for you who might wonder, our third participant Michael could not join us for the trip due to problems with the visa.

Blogging from St. Petersburg 13-16 October

Tomorrow morning I leave for St. Petersburg and our Emax Winner trip. Bodil, Michael and Tuukka will fly in today and I will join them tomorrow.

During the next four days, we will meet companies and entrepreneurs in the beautiful Russian city. We go to learn about business and entrepreneurship in a foreign country and the schedule is packed with interesting meetings.

Hopefully the hotel offers an internet connection that I can use to keep you posted about what we learn on the trip. Otherwise I will back-post it when I get back.

Is it anything special you want to find out? Ask a question and I will try to find the answer.
